Wayzata, Edina, Holy Angels, Mahtomedi, and Southwest Christian Compete in Minnesota High School Girls Soccer State Championships at U.S. Bank Stadium

Trojans Dominate with Stellar Performance in State Tournament

In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, the Wayzata Trojans showcased their prowess on the soccer field, securing a commanding 4-0 victory over Eagan in the state tournament. The match, held on a crisp autumn afternoon, highlighted the Trojans’ offensive firepower and defensive resilience, setting the stage for what could be a memorable postseason run.

Vellieux’s Brilliance Shines Bright

Sophomore standout Alex Vellieux was the star of the show, making her mark early in the match. In the 13th minute, she capitalized on a rebound from a corner kick, deftly poking the ball into the net after a save from the Eagan goalkeeper. This early goal set the tone for the Trojans, who quickly found their rhythm. Vellieux wasn’t done yet; she later headed home another corner, extending the lead to 3-0 before halftime. Her performance not only showcased her scoring ability but also highlighted her knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Adding to the excitement, sophomore Lauren Craig recorded her 22nd assist of the season on Vellieux’s header, placing her third in the state for assists. Craig’s vision and playmaking skills have been instrumental for the Trojans, and her ability to deliver precise crosses under pressure was on full display during this match.

Coach Peszneker’s Praise for Young Talent

Wayzata head coach Tony Peszneker expressed his admiration for the contributions of his younger players. “(Our freshman and sophomores) have been key contributors along the way,” he noted. “For Alex and Lauren, two players that have been key features throughout the season, that just says a lot for them, on this stage, in these parts of the game, when they’re just sophomores.” This acknowledgment reflects the confidence and maturity that these young athletes have displayed throughout the season, proving that age is just a number when it comes to talent and determination.

Senior Leadership and Team Cohesion

The Trojans’ success was not solely reliant on their younger players. Senior forward Sophie Hawkinson also made her presence felt, assisting Vellieux’s final goal and scoring one herself in the second half. Hawkinson’s ability to read the game and connect with her teammates was crucial, as she finished a well-placed ball slotted in from the right flank by Vellieux. Her leadership on the field has been a guiding force for the team, especially in high-stakes situations like this.

Defensive Dominance Against Eagan

While the Trojans’ offense garnered much of the attention, their defense was equally impressive. The Wayzata backline, led by senior defender Ava Nayar, effectively neutralized an Eagan team that had scored an impressive 51 goals this season. Nayar emphasized the importance of maintaining composure against Eagan’s fast and aggressive forwards. “We definitely talked as the back line, knowing that their forwards are super fast and aggressive,” she explained. “Just keeping them in front of us, not letting them spin us, and making a statement that no team can get past Wayzata.” This strategic approach paid off, as Eagan struggled to create scoring opportunities and failed to register a single shot on goal throughout the match.

A Legacy of Excellence

Wayzata’s victory in this match adds to its storied history in Minnesota high school soccer. With seven state championships to their name, the Trojans last claimed the title in 2012 and have consistently been a formidable presence in the tournament, making appearances more frequently than any other team in the state. Their experience and resilience in high-pressure situations have positioned them as strong contenders once again this year, as they aim to reclaim their place at the top of Minnesota high school soccer.

As the Trojans continue their journey through the state tournament, the combination of youthful talent, seasoned leadership, and a solid defensive strategy will be key to their success. Fans and supporters alike are eager to see how this talented team will perform as they chase another championship title.
