After years of kicking a ball on the soccer field, Samuel felt the urge to explore something new. “I knew I had to find a way to make sure my parents and the rest of my family were sorted, and that I would end the suffering of finances,” he reflects. His decision to take up rugby was inspired by the remarkable story of Siya Kolisi, the South African rugby captain whose rise from humble beginnings resonates deeply with Samuel. Finding a Home at Diggers Rugby Club
Joining Diggers Rugby Club has been a transformative experience for Samuel. “Diggers Rugby is the best rugby club. They are a family, not just a team of individuals,” he explains, highlighting the camaraderie and support he has found within the club. As a member of the U19 team, despite being only 18 years old, Samuel feels a strong sense of belonging. “They make me feel accepted. I depend on them, and they depend on me,” he adds, emphasizing the team spirit that defines Diggers. This supportive environment has been crucial for Samuel as he navigates the challenges of a new sport.
Commitment and Training Regimen
Samuel’s commitment to rugby is evident in his rigorous training schedule. He balances two club practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays with regular gym sessions at Virgin Active Northgate. “We usually have a game on Saturdays,” he shares, illustrating a week filled with physical activity and competition. When I pray, I feel like I can do anything. The verse I use is Philippians 4:13,” he reveals, showcasing how spirituality fuels his ambition.

Samuel’s journey has not been without its hurdles. Recently, he trialled for the Lions Rugby Club’s Inter-Provincial Team but narrowly missed out on selection. This determination reflects his larger aspirations; Samuel hopes to join a rugby institute next year after completing matric, with the ultimate goal of becoming a professional player within five years.

Now, I’m ready for what’s ahead,” he shares, illustrating his ability to bounce back from adversity. Currently, his focus is on improving his scrumming skills, which he views as essential for his development. “I want my scrumming to be top tier – that would make me an immovable object,” he asserts, showcasing his ambition to excel in every aspect of the game.
