Sports Complex Expands with Three New Soccer Fields | News, Sports, Jobs

Belmont Soar FC: A New Era for Soccer in Belmont County

A New Home for Soccer Enthusiasts

In the heart of Belmont County, a significant transformation is taking place at the Belmont County Sports Complex, a sprawling 28-acre site that has long been a hub for recreational activities. Originally established in 1986 as part of a reclamation project, this complex is now set to become the home of the Belmont Soar FC, a new soccer club dedicated to nurturing the love of soccer in the local community. While the complex has been utilized for youth baseball, the introduction of Belmont Soar FC marks a pivotal moment in expanding the region’s sporting landscape.

Building a Foundation for the Future

Currently, the complex boasts two youth soccer fields designated for U10 and U12 teams. However, the vision for Belmont Soar FC extends far beyond these initial offerings. Plans are in place to develop three additional fields, along with various amenities that will enhance the experience for players and spectators alike. Jaclyn Ketter, the club’s President and Coach, emphasizes the importance of this development phase: “This is the very beginning stages of our complex development. We are holding practices and just trying to grow soccer in our community.”

Rapid Growth in a Short Time

Despite being a non-profit organization for only 11 months, Belmont Soar FC has made remarkable strides. Starting with just one team, the club has quickly expanded to two teams, demonstrating a growing interest in soccer among local youth. Ketter highlights the club’s partnership with the Belmont County Commissioners, which has been instrumental in securing field space and resources. “We had no complex and no field space. Now we have partnered with the Belmont County Commissioners and have plans to develop five fields,” she explains.

Aiming for Inclusivity and Growth

Belmont Soar FC aims to foster a love for soccer among younger players, with plans to introduce teams for U4, U6, and U8 age groups in the spring. Ketter recognizes the unique challenges faced by the southeastern part of Ohio, which has historically been less soccer-friendly. “We would like to open that up in Belmont County and, hopefully, extend out to neighboring counties in an attempt to grow soccer in this area,” she states. The club currently has 40 girls participating, a testament to its commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of young female athletes.

Teaching the Fundamentals

A core philosophy of Belmont Soar FC is to instill a strong foundation in the basics of soccer from an early age. Ketter emphasizes the importance of teaching the rules and skills of the game correctly, ensuring that young players develop a solid understanding of soccer. “Soccer is the World’s sport. It’s finally coming to America, and with what Lionel Messi and the U.S. Women’s National team has accomplished, there’s a renewed excitement and interest in the sport,” she notes.

Personal Connections and Community Impact

For Ketter, the journey into coaching and developing soccer in Belmont County is deeply personal. Growing up in St. Clairsville and now seeing her daughter involved in the sport, she is passionate about providing more opportunities for youth in the area. “Too many high schools around here don’t have soccer programs, but I think if we help them learn about it now, that will only benefit everyone down the road,” she reflects. Her commitment to giving back to the community is echoed by other board members, including Devin Cain, who shares the excitement of finally having a dedicated space for practices and games.

Future Plans and Community Involvement

Looking ahead, the club envisions a vibrant soccer community that includes not only fields for play but also amenities that enhance the overall experience for families. Plans for a playground are in the works, allowing younger siblings to engage while older players compete. Additionally, Ketter mentions the need for a concession stand and bleachers to accommodate spectators. “What we need to make this work are donations, community involvement, and parent involvement to help develop that for the future,” says Katie Fowkes, the club’s treasurer.

A Vision for Lasting Impact

As Belmont Soar FC embarks on this exciting journey, the collective vision of its board members and community supporters is clear: to create a lasting legacy for soccer in Belmont County. With a focus on youth development, community engagement, and the growth of the sport, Belmont Soar FC is poised to become a cornerstone of recreational soccer in the region, inspiring generations of players to come.
