College Basketball Futures Bets: Undervalued Teams and National Title Contenders
As the excitement of college basketball season kicks off, fans and bettors alike are gearing up for what promises to be an exhilarating ride. With the potential for upsets, breakout performances, and nail-biting finishes, there’s no better time to dive into futures betting. This season, I’m particularly interested in identifying undervalued teams and exploring why they might be flying under the radar. Below, I’ve outlined my favorite national title bets, conference champion picks, and a couple of long-shot National Player of the Year candidates that could yield significant returns.
Favorite National Title Bets
Alabama (+1200)
Alabama is currently tied as the second-betting favorite to win the national title, but I believe they are still being undervalued. The Crimson Tide boasts a roster filled with talent, featuring around ten players who could start for many high-major teams across the country. At the helm is Mark Sears, arguably the best guard in college basketball, who will lead a top-tier offense. The addition of Clifford Omoruyi, a formidable big man from Rutgers, enhances their defensive capabilities and allows for versatile lineup options. With a wealth of talent on the wings and a proven coach in Nate Oats, Alabama is poised to make a deep run, and I consider them the clear frontrunner entering the season.
Gonzaga (+1900)
Ranked No. 3 in the preseason by C.J. Moore and myself, Gonzaga is another team that presents excellent value. The Zags have an explosive offense, led by Ryan Nembhard, who emerged as a key player late last season. With the addition of senior transfers Khalif Battle and Michael Ajayi, Gonzaga’s offensive firepower is undeniable. Their frontcourt is equally impressive, featuring three high-major starters in Graham Ike, Ben Gregg, and Braden Huff. If Gonzaga can maintain their offensive prowess, they will be a formidable contender for the national title.
Baylor (+2500)
Baylor’s roster has the potential for a deep March run, making them an intriguing bet at +2500. While they may experience some early growing pains, their backcourt is exceptional. With fifth-year starter Jeremy Roach and breakout candidate Jayden Nunn, the Bears have the talent to compete at a high level. Freshman VJ Edgecombe is expected to make a significant impact, and the addition of All-ACC transfer Norchad Omier adds depth to the frontcourt. If Baylor can solidify their frontcourt, they could surprise many come tournament time.
Favorite Conference Bets
Illinois (+1100 to win Big Ten)
Illinois is one of my favorite under-the-radar teams this season. Their lead guard, Kasparas Jakucionis, is not being properly assessed by the betting markets. I believe he has the potential to be a lottery pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and will be instrumental in running the Illini offense. The addition of transfer wings Tre White and Ben Humrichous strengthens their roster, while Tomislav Ivisic offers a solid presence in the paint. With Brad Underwood at the helm, I expect Illinois to outperform their current pricing as the fifth-best team in the Big Ten.
Arizona (+850 to win the Big 12)
Under Tommy Lloyd, Arizona has consistently competed at the top of their league, and this year is no different. With a talented backcourt led by returning Pac-12 Player of the Year Caleb Love, the Wildcats are well-equipped to challenge for the title. The depth in their frontcourt, including breakout candidate Motiejus Krivas and Tennessee transfer Tobe Awaka, adds to their strength. Given the uncertainty surrounding Kansas and Iowa State, I believe Arizona is undervalued as the fourth-best team in the league.
San Diego State (+450 to win the Mountain West)
Coach Brian Dutcher has built a reputation for success, and San Diego State remains a top contender in the Mountain West. Despite losing key players, the Aztecs have retooled effectively through the transfer portal, bringing in talents like Nick Boyd and Wayne McKinney III. Their defensive prowess is a hallmark of Dutcher’s teams, and I trust that they will remain competitive in the title race.
Saint Joseph’s (+1000 to win the Atlantic 10)
The Atlantic 10 is shaping up to be a competitive league, and Saint Joseph’s has the talent to emerge as a top contender. Under Billy Lange, the Hawks have three potential pros on their roster, including two-time All-A-10 guard Erik Reynolds II and dynamic sophomore Xzayvier Brown. With an impressive mix of talent and experience, I believe Saint Joseph’s is well-positioned to make a run at the A-10 title.
National Player of the Year Bets
Ryan Nembhard (+10000 at PointsBet Sportsbook)
As a key player for Gonzaga, Ryan Nembhard is a strong candidate for National Player of the Year. If Gonzaga can make a significant run, Nembhard will be at the center of their success. His performance last season showcased his potential, and if he can develop a consistent jumper, he could become a dominant force in college basketball.
Kadary Richmond (+7500 at DraftKings Sportsbook)
Kadary Richmond, a returning first-team All-Big East player, is another intriguing candidate. Now with Saint John’s, he has the opportunity to shine under coach Rick Pitino. With impressive stats from last season, Richmond’s value at +7500 seems too high if he can lead his team to success in the competitive Big East.
As the college basketball season unfolds, these futures bets offer exciting opportunities for fans and bettors alike. With a mix of talent, coaching prowess, and potential for surprises, the landscape of college hoops is ripe for exploration. Whether you’re looking to back a national title contender or find value in conference bets, there’s plenty to consider as the season progresses.
